Beijing Hotels: Your Modern Hutongs and Siheyuans
Noiselessly observing the lavish and modern Beijing hotels are the city’s ancient houses: the Hutongs and Siheyuans. What are hutongs? They are alleys formed by groups of siheyuans or long-established courtyard residences. By connecting one siheyuan to another and one hutong to another, many neighborhoods were formed.
The term “hutong,” meaning “water wells,” was first used during the Yuan Dynasty, which is believed to be of Mongol origin.
Under the sovereignty of the Ming dynasty, the roads of the capital were formed into concentric rings surrounding the Forbidden City. Higher class citizens were permitted to live nearer the center and their hutongs were bigger, more orderly and more beautiful. On the other hand, merchants, artisans, commoners and laborers had smaller and simpler hutongs, where they lived farther from the circle. The hutong was historically considered to be China’s simplest level of administrative division, compared to that of villages in some countries.
Fueling more interest, the hutongs are christened with unique names. These include places, plants such as Liushu (willow) Hutong, directions, markets, temples, and even words having positive attributes, like Xiqing (happy) Hutong. This play of words can already make you smile even though you haven’t gone to the place yet.
Significant changes happened in the 20th century, especially when China’s dynastic era ended. The arrangement of the hutongs was affected because many new ones were built haphazardly. The old ones lost their former glory, while dozens sprouted in the outskirts of the city.
Following the founding of China as a People’s Republic, many of the old hutongs were dismantled and were replaced with wider and grander boulevards and high-rise buildings, some of which are prominent hotels in Beijing. This forced generations of families to leave their hutongs in search for newer homes.
Good thing that a number of Beijing’s ancient hutongs can still be seen while some of them have been made protected areas. These older neighborhoods give the modern man a glimpse of how life once was in this rural yet fascinating capital. Beijing Hotels in the Midst of the Olympic Green
China is one of the world’s emerging superpowers and has lately made her presence felt in the international arena as she was chosen to host the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Held every four years, the Olympics is participated in by about 120 countries, with groups battling it out in several sports, from swimming to diving, from track-and-field to javelin throwing, from basketball to soccer, you name it.
Beijing did not waste time in finding the venues after being chosen to host the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Capital Museum: A Worthwhile Destination for Tourist Staying in Beijing Hotels
